Consider Phlebas

considerAnother great Sci-Fi book from Banks (actually his first but it’s the second one I’ve read). Very entertaining, full of interesting characters and lots of action. It has many layers so it can be enjoyed just for the story, action and characters or you can delve deeper. It struck me as a macrocosm of humanity (and the lack of). It throws punches (and connects) at War, Religion, Self-Righteousness and so called humanity. The story does not shy away from violence, hate and cruelty which is as much a part of being as love and compassion (which the story contains too). Each character in the story are who they are, and each is justified in their actions. They are no longer good or bad they just are. Parts of the story are very dark and violent so I would not recommend it to just anyone.

Hey there! I just came across your site when I saw your link posted on one of the condron forums, so I thought I’d stop by and check it out. Your blog is very interesting, I like your style, even though I generally look for blogs of a different genre. But hey, once in a while I’ll get in the mood to hop around other people’s stuff about other random topics- probably good for me. 😉

But anyway I just wanted to drop in and say hi and nice work! 🙂
